In folklore, this rock is said to be part of Dewi Danu’s petrified barque.
Though a small temple was claimed to have existed earlier, the structure was significantly expanded by a Javanese sage, Empu Kuturan in the 11th Century. Another sage from East Java, Dang Hyang Nirartha is credited for constructing the padmasana shrines and it is said that he attained moksha here, an event called ngeluhur (“to go up”) locally. This has resulted in the temple’s epithet Luhur. The temple is inhabited by monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), who are notorious for snatching visitors’ belongings, such as flip-flops, cameras, and sunglasses. Using the dancers as a means of communication, the deities and ancestors convey their wishes. In the 1930s, the ancient Indian epic Ramayana was included among the dance disciplines. the narrative of Bali’s Kecak and Fire Dance follows the story of Rama, a wise prince of Ayodya who is exiled from the kingdom of his father, King Dasarata. Accompanied by his wife Sita and younger brother Laksamana, Rama takes refuge in the forest of Dandaka. During their stay, the demon king Rahwana, desiring Sita, devises a cunning plan with the help of his prime minister Marica. Marica, using her magical power, transforms herself into a golden deer to distract Rama and Laksamana, allowing Rahwana to kidnap Sita and take her to his palace in Alengka. Rama and Laksamana, discovering the deception, set out to rescue Sita with the help of a vast army of monkeys led by Hanuman. Rama finally manages to bring his wife back safely, and some of these crucial events are depicted in the performance of the Kecak Dance.

Our last stop will be as the highlitght of the trip to see Tanah Lot Temple, is a rock formation off the Indonesian island of Bali. It is home to the ancient Hindu pilgrimage temple Pura Tanah Lot (literally “Tanah Lot temple”), a popular tourist and cultural icon for photography.
Tanah Lot means “Land Sea” in the Balinese language. Located in Tabanan, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) northwest of Denpasar, the temple sits on a large offshore rock which has been shaped continuously over the years by the ocean tide.
Tanah Lot is claimed to be the work of the 16th-century Dang Hyang Nirartha. During his travels along the south coast, he saw the rock-island’s beautiful setting and decided to rest there. Some fishermen saw him and bought him gifts. Nirartha then spent the night on the little island. Later he spoke to the fishermen and told them to build a shrine on the rock, for he felt it to be a holy place to worship the Balinese sea gods. The main deity of the temple is Dewa Baruna or Bhatara Segara (Lord of the sea), who is the sea god or sea power and these days, Nirartha is also worshipped here.
